First off, I love hawaiian beaches. Miles and miles of beaches. But on the big island, trying to find a nice beach was very hard to find ( I stayed on the Kona side).Saddle Road is a mostly four lane highway. The Hamakua Route is nothing like the road to Hana either. There are some tight turns through the gulches, but it’s not a one lane road anywhere. I think another must do is a boat snorkeling trip in addition to the manta one.The Big Island is very diverse from rain forest to snow covered peaks to live lava flows to up country mourain towns. He plays most Mondays at Kona Village which you could view.I'm sorry but your two consecutive trips to the East side of the island from the West are bugging me. Clear skies on the Big Island are more probable in the South Kohala area near Puako but away from resort or harbor lights. Just walk out into an open area & look up. As for clear skies in Volcano it's a crap shoot. It's more probable to be raining.SonomaGal: Yes small town w/ easy beach access doesn't really exist on the Big Island. Kona is the closest but really touristy. With only 4 days on the Island I would suggest focusing on one region (unless you really like driving allot). Waiemea or Waikoloa area might be spots to stay..
